India Becomes World’s Second-Largest Mobile Manufacturing Hub; Over 300 Units, 99.2% Local Production
New Delhi, Feb 5 (KNN) The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology has released data highlighting India's remarkable transformation in mobile phone manufacturing over the past decade, establishing the country as the world's second-largest mobile manufacturing hub.
According to the ministry's latest update, India has witnessed an extraordinary expansion in its mobile manufacturing capabilities, with the number of manufacturing units growing from merely two in 2014 to more than 300 units today.
This substantial increase in manufacturing capacity has revolutionised the domestic mobile phone market, with locally manufactured devices now accounting for 99.2 percent of all mobile phones sold in India, a dramatic increase from just 26 percent in 2014-15.
The financial impact of this manufacturing revolution is equally impressive, with the manufacturing value of mobile phones experiencing a twenty-two-fold increase.
The sector has grown from Rs 18,900 crore in fiscal year 2014 to an impressive Rs 4,22,000 crore in fiscal year 2024, demonstrating the substantial economic benefits of India's push toward domestic manufacturing.
This transformation reflects the success of government initiatives to boost domestic manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imports, positioning India as a significant player in the global mobile manufacturing landscape.
The dramatic shift from import dependency to near-complete domestic production represents a major milestone in India's manufacturing sector development and technological self-reliance.
