Data Protection & AI Law, Semiconductor Chips To Be Priority Under IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

ENA Sectors 2024-06-11 15:53:32 New Delhi, Jun 11 (KNN) Ashwini Vaishnaw will continue as India's Minister of Electronics and IT (MeitY) in the new government, positioning key technology initiatives for faster implementation. A top priority will be rolling out the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) law to safeguard citizens' data privacy. The government's semiconductor mission to establish chip factories will also gain momentum. Bolstering domestic manufacturing of components like AI chipsets is on the agenda. Currently, the U.S. and China dominate AI computing infrastructure led by firms like Nvidia with its high-performance GPUs. The ministry will facilitate big tech companies setting up mega-campuses with clusters of factories to produce a range of electronics products in India. Building on the Rs 76,000 crore semiconductor program, more chip fabrication and assembly projects are expected to be approved. Other key initiatives include the National AI mission, online gaming regulations, and policies around non-personal data governance. A decision on extending the successful smartphone production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme or transitioning to a component manufacturing program will be taken. The scheme helped raise domestic smartphone production value to Rs 4.1 trillion in FY24 from Rs 2.14 trillion pre-PLI. Industry has welcomed Vaishnaw's continuity, citing his expertise for ensuring policy certainty and bolstering investor confidence in India's burgeoning electronics ecosytem.
