New Delhi, Mar 10 (KNN) India has imposed an anti-dumping duty of up to USD 986 per tonne on 'Trichloro isocyanuric acid,' a chemical used for water treatment, imported from China and Japan.

The duty will remain in effect for five years to protect domestic industry from cheap imports, as stated in a notification from the Ministry of Finance, according to PTI.

The anti-dumping duty imposed...shall be levied for a period of five years (unless revoked, superseded or amended earlier), the notification declared.

The decision follows recommendations from the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), the investigation arm of the commerce ministry.

The DGTR determined that domestic manufacturers had suffered material injury due to the dumping of this chemical from China and Japan.

Anti-dumping measures are implemented to ensure fair trade practices and provide a level playing field for local industries. They are not intended to restrict imports or unfairly increase product costs.

While the DGTR investigates these cases and makes recommendations, the finance ministry makes the final decision, typically within three months.

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) permits countries to impose anti-dumping duties as a legitimate trade measure, but only after proper investigations confirm that dumping is occurring.

These duties generally last for several years and can be reviewed or extended if necessary.

Both China and Japan are significant trading partners for India. Under WTO regulations, countries are allowed to impose anti-dumping duties when domestic industries are harmed by below-cost imports.

This measure is expected to protect Indian manufacturers from unfair pricing practices and maintain a stable market for the chemical.

(KNN Bureau)
