New Delhi, Mar 11 (KNN) The parliamentary standing committee on railways has proposed expanding indigenous manufacturing of Shinkansen technology components under the Make in India initiative to support the long-term sustainability of high-speed rail operations, according to an official statement.

The committee also observed that the net earnings of the national transporter have remained marginal for the past three years. Commenting on India's bullet train development, it noted that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project was estimated to cost Rs 1.08 lakh crore.

An expenditure of Rs 71,116 crore has been incurred so far on the project as of January 2025, and the overall physical progress stands at 48.55 per cent, the statement said.

For upcoming high-speed rail projects, the committee recommended that feasibility studies be conducted, innovative financing models be explored, and funding be secured before sanctioning new corridors.

The standing committee also urged the railways ministry to explore alternative avenues for boosting passenger revenues, such as service-based revenue generation and improved on-board amenities.
