Centre Pushes For Rapid Expansion Of EV Infrastructure Under PM E-Drive Scheme

Kumaraswamy convened an inter-ministerial coordination meeting on Wednesday to review and accelerate the implementation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure under the PM E-Drive scheme. The meeting brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and Ministry of Heavy Industries. The PM E-Drive scheme represents a comprehensive initiative to establish a nationwide EV-ready ecosystem aimed at promoting cleaner transportation and reducing India's reliance on fossil fuels. The program operates with a financial allocation of Rs 2,000 crore and targets the installation of approximately 72,000 public EV charging stations across the country. The charging stations will be strategically positioned along 50 national highway corridors and at high-traffic locations including metropolitan cities, toll plazas, railway stations, airports, fuel outlets, and state highways. This distribution strategy aims to ensure comprehensive coverage and accessibility for electric vehicle users throughout India. Minister Kumaraswamy outlined the scheme's broader objectives, describing it as a transformative initiative designed to provide citizens with access to clean, affordable, and convenient mobility options. He emphasised that the program extends beyond infrastructure development to establish foundations for energy security and green economic growth. The implementation framework designates Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) as the nodal agency responsible for demand aggregation and the development of a unified digital platform. This super app will serve as a centralised system for EV users across India, incorporating features such as real-time slot booking, integrated payment systems, charger availability status updates, and progress dashboards for tracking national deployment. BHEL will coordinate with state governments and various ministries to compile and evaluate proposals for charger installations. The digital platform aims to streamline the user experience while providing comprehensive monitoring capabilities for the nationwide rollout. The minister emphasised the importance of collaborative federalism in achieving the scheme's objectives, noting that successful clean energy transition requires coordinated efforts across government levels. The initiative aligns multiple ministries, public sector enterprises, and state governments to ensure effective ground-level implementation. The PM E-Drive scheme is expected to generate significant environmental and economic benefits, including substantial reductions in carbon emissions from the transport sector, promotion of domestic manufacturing in EV infrastructure under the Make in India initiative, and establishment of groundwork for a net-zero mobility future. The program also anticipates the creation of green jobs and the development of new industries related to electric vehicle infrastructure.
