DMRC Invites Bids For 500 MU Renewable Energy To Power Metro Operations

ENA Sectors 2025-10-13 17:35:56 New Delhi, Oct 13 (KNN) The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited bids for the supply of 500 million units (MU) of renewable energy annually to power its operations, officials said on Sunday. According to an official statement, the DMRC plans to select a solar power developer to establish a grid-connected captive generating plant equipped with a battery energy storage system (BESS) at any location across India, reported Business Standard. The power generated will be supplied to DMRC under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA), with the project expected to be completed within 15 months of the award. At present, Delhi Metro meets around 33 per cent of its total electricity demand fr0m renewable sources. It procures approximately 350 MU annually fr0m the Rewa Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh and generates another 40 MU through rooftop solar installations across its stations, depots, and residential complexes. During daytime operations, the share of renewable energy rises to nearly 65 per cent, the statement noted. Through the new initiative, DMRC aims to raise the renewable share in its overall power mix to over 60 per cent, covering not only its existing network but also the upcoming Phase-IV expansion. If achieved, it will become the first Metro system in the country to source more than half of its total energy fr0m clean sources, the statement said. The move aligns with DMRCs ongoing efforts to promote sustainable and low-carbon urban transport and supports Indias Panchamrit climate action commitments announced at COP26.
