India, Nepal Sign Key Agreements To Develop Cross-Border Power Transmission Corridors

ENA Global 2025-10-29 16:45:57 New Delhi, Oct 29 (KNN) India and Nepal have strengthened their energy partnership by signing key agreements between POWERGRID and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to develop two major cross-border transmission systems. Nepals Minister, Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Kulman Ghising, met Indias Power Minister, Manohar Lal, in New Delhi on Wednesday to review ongoing cooperation in the power sector. The discussions focused on the progress of hydropower projects in Nepal and regional grid connectivity initiatives aimed at facilitating cross-border electricity trade, enhancing energy security, and promoting the integration of clean energy resources between the two countries. In the presence of both ministers, POWERGRID, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise of India, and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) signed the Joint Venture and Shareholders Agreements (JV&SHA). The agreements pave the way for the creation of two joint venture entities—one in India and the other in Nepal—to develop high-capacity cross-border transmission infrastructure. The projects include the development of the Inaruwa (Nepal) New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link and the Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal) Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link. Once operational, these corridors are expected to significantly enhance electricity exchange between India and Nepal, bolster grid resilience, and strengthen regional energy security. The meeting underscores both nations shared commitment to sustainable development, regional connectivity, and a long-term clean-energy partnership.
