Haryana Expands Clean Energy Capacity With 240 TPD Biomass Pellet Plant In Rewari

ENA State 2025-11-25 14:12:15 Chandigarh, Nov 25 (KNN) Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi inaugurated a 240 tonnes per day (TPD) biomass pellet plant in Rewari on Sunday, calling it a major boost to Haryanas clean energy expansion. The Minister noted that the Centre has recently introduced a policy requiring all coal-based thermal power plants to co-fire biomass pellets or torrefied municipal solid waste (MSW) charcoal. While plants across India must blend 5 percent biomass, Delhi NCR units must reach a 7 percent mix, with at least half sourced from local crop residue. He emphasised the need for improved waste segregation and stronger regulatory systems to ensure the availability of quality MSW-based charcoal. The newly launched plant will process paddy straw, mustard straw and cotton stalks into biomass pellets for thermal power co-firing. Joshi said the project will help lower emissions, address stubble burning and generate additional income for farmers. India has nearly doubled its power capacity in the past decade and now exports electricity, the Minister said, adding that Haryana has significantly benefited from this expansion. The States current 12 Giga Watt (GW) capacity is expected to grow to around 24 GW in the coming years. Haryana has installed over 2.8 GW of renewable energy capacity, including 2.4 GW of solar. More than 45,000 households have adopted rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with over 2 lakh applications received. Under PM Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan (PM-KUSUM), Haryana has added 18.61 Mega Watt (MW) under Component A and deployed more than 1.74 lakh solar pumps, enabling farmers to move away from diesel-based irrigation. Joshi also highlighted Haryanas progress in green hydrogen, with key projects in Hisar, Panipat and Jhajjar. The State has a biomass potential of over 1,350 MW and nearly 49 MW of waste-to-energy capacity across 26 facilities. Reaffirming the Centres support, the Minister said Haryana is rapidly emerging as a major clean energy hub.
