BSNL Introduces Wi-Fi Calling To Improve Connectivity In Low-Signal Areas

ENA Sectors 2026-01-01 16:29:58 New Delhi, Jan 1 (KNN) Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi), also referred to as Wi-Fi Calling, making the service available to its customers across all telecom circles in the country. The launch marks an expansion of BSNLs service offerings aimed at improving call connectivity in areas with limited mobile network coverage. VoWiFi allows customers to make and receive voice calls and messages over a Wi-Fi network, enabling communication in locations such as homes, offices, basements and remote areas where mobile signals may be weak. The service uses the customers existing mobile number and handset dialer and does not require any third-party applications. The service is based on an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) framework and supports seamless handover between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. It is expected to be particularly useful in rural and remote regions where stable Wi-Fi connectivity is available through BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services. In addition, VoWiFi is intended to help reduce congestion on mobile networks. BSNL has stated that the VoWiFi facility is being offered free of cost, with no additional charges for calls made over Wi-Fi. The service is supported on most modern smartphones, and users are required to enable Wi-Fi Calling through their device settings. Information on device compatibility and support is available through BSNL customer service centres and the BSNL helpline. According to the company, the nationwide launch of VoWiFi forms part of its broader network modernisation efforts and its focus on improving connectivity, particularly in underserved and low-coverage areas.
